Latex Mattress Firmness: How to Choose
Firmness is one of the hardest mattress specifications to translate from a product page to a bedroom. Latex adds another term—ILD—but ILD measures the foam sample, not the full finished mattress experience.
What ILD tells you
Indentation Load Deflection describes the force needed to compress a foam sample by a specified amount under a test method. Higher values generally indicate firmer foam. Mattress feel also depends on layer thickness, cover tension, zoning and support construction.
Position and body size
Side sleepers generally need enough give for shoulder and hip pressure, while stomach sleepers often need stronger resistance under the pelvis. Back sleepers usually fall between those extremes. Heavier bodies compress deeper layers sooner, so the same mattress can feel softer.
Eco Terra example
Eco Terra publishes 24–26 ILD for Medium and 29–31 for Medium-Firm, both using a 3-inch latex layer. That is unusually concrete information, but the trial period remains the real-world check.
