How Latex Mattresses Are Made
A latex mattress begins with liquid latex formulation and ends as a layered sleep system. The foam-making process is only one step; zoning, perforation, layer thickness, textiles and support construction all shape the finished bed.
Foam formation
Liquid latex is mixed and foamed, placed into a mold, vulcanized with heat, washed and dried. Dunlop and Talalay use different process sequences, which can produce different foam characteristics.
Layer design
Manufacturers cut or mold cores at particular thicknesses and firmnesses. Perforation patterns can aid airflow and can be used as part of zoning. Multiple latex layers may be stacked to create comfort and support transitions.
Hybrid assembly
In a latex hybrid, the foam comfort layer sits above a coil unit, often pocketed so springs can respond independently. Wool is commonly used near the surface as both cushioning and a flame-barrier material, with cotton in the cover.
