What Is Natural Latex in a Mattress?
Natural latex foam is made primarily from rubber-tree latex rather than petroleum-derived synthetic rubber. But product labels can be imprecise, so shoppers should look for composition disclosure and certification rather than relying on the word “natural” alone.
Natural versus synthetic
Natural latex starts with Hevea brasiliensis rubber-tree sap. Synthetic latex can use polymers such as styrene-butadiene rubber. Some foams blend natural and synthetic latex to target particular performance or cost characteristics.
Organic is a separate claim
Natural does not automatically mean organic. GOLS certification is one way manufacturers substantiate organic-latex claims. A mattress may combine certified organic latex with non-organic components elsewhere.
Why it matters to feel
Natural content alone does not determine softness or comfort. Processing method, density, ILD, thickness and mattress design all change how the foam behaves.
