Do Latex Mattresses Smell? What New-Latex Odor Is Like
New latex mattresses can have an odor, but it is not necessarily the same phenomenon people call polyurethane “off-gassing.” Natural latex can carry a mild rubber-like scent, while wool, cotton, adhesives or packaging can also contribute to a new-bed smell.
What to expect
Odor intensity varies by formulation, packaging time and personal sensitivity. Some mattresses arrive compressed, which can concentrate normal material smells when the package is first opened.
Ventilation helps
Unbox the mattress in a well-ventilated room, remove plastic promptly and allow bedding-free air exposure according to the manufacturer’s setup instructions. Avoid adding fragrances that simply mask the source.
When to contact the seller
If an odor is unusually strong, irritating or persists well beyond the brand's guidance, contact the manufacturer. Material certification can provide useful emissions information, but it does not guarantee that a person will perceive no odor.
